- They have complex B2B requirements. Contract pricing, account hierarchies, punchout catalog support, and custom approval workflows that Shopify B2B cannot yet match.
- They have the budget and the team. SFCC rewards investment. Brands with dedicated engineering teams and six-figure annual platform budgets can extract significant value from the platform's flexibility.
- They value the unified Salesforce data model. When your support agents, marketing team, and commerce platform all share the same customer record, the operational benefits are real.
If none of those describe your situation, SFCC is likely overbuilt and overpriced for what you need.
Making the Decision
For most mid-market ecommerce brands, especially those running NetSuite, Shopify Plus offers a faster path to market, lower total cost, and a more predictable operational model. The gap in enterprise features has narrowed considerably, and the app ecosystem fills most remaining gaps.
Salesforce Commerce Cloud makes sense when the value proposition extends beyond commerce into a unified Salesforce stack. If you are already paying for Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and CDP, adding Commerce Cloud creates genuine operational leverage. But if Commerce Cloud would be your first Salesforce product, the cost and complexity are hard to justify.
The worst outcome is choosing SFCC because it sounds more "enterprise" and then spending 18 months and $800K on an implementation that could have been done in 8 weeks on Shopify Plus.
